If you have standard-size window frames you can probably find vertical blinds of the right width. But it’s easy to adjust the width of the blinds to the right size. To ensure a good fit you should buy blinds that are slightly longer than the height of the window frame. You can buy vertical blinds in different colors and materials, such as vinyl, aluminium and textiles.
You can fit the vertical blinds in different ways depending on the available space and your own preference. By using separately available spacer brackets you can also fit the top rail of the blind free-standing at any desired height. Fit the blind at a suitable distance from the window frame to allow for the width of the slats, so they can open and close freely. Use the spacer brackets if the vertical blind isn’t fitted to the ceiling.
If you need to shorten the rail, first of all loosen the end cap fixing screw and slide the end cap along the rail to just past your cutting line. Pull the cord tight and tighten the end cap fixing screw again. Position the runners so the slats will be evenly spaced when the blind is hung up. Saw the rail to the right width and file the edge smooth.
You need to remove one runner and slat for every 10 cm by which you reduce the width of the rail. Lift the end cap carefully with a screwdriver and slide the excess runners past it. Then click the first runner into place with the end cap.
Hold the rail in place with the cord on the correct side. Mark the positions of the holes to be drilled through the predrilled holes in the rail. Drill the holes with a 6 masonry drill and insert the wall plugs. Then screw the rail in place so the head of the screw is recessed in the rail. You can also fit the rail to the ceiling using clips, which allow you to remove it easily later.
Locate the position of the first bracket and mark the positions of the holes to be drilled. Drill the holes with a 6 mm masonry drill and insert the wall plugs. Screw the first bracket into place and partially tighten the fixing screws. Then fit the second bracket at the same distance from the other end of the rail. If you need a third bracket, fit it in the middle between the other two brackets.
When you’ve mounted the rail you can fix the slats in place. Slide the metal hangers into the seams at the tops of the slats. Take the first slat and mark the required height by folding the bottom edge of the slat upwards. Allow a gap of 15 mm from the floor or window sill. Add 9 cm to the length of the slat above the fold line, and then cut off the rest of the slat.
Different types of weights are available so the slats hang neatly by gravity. In the example below, you slide a plastic clip with small hooks over the lower end of the slat with the hooks facing upwards. Push about 3 cm of the material of the slat through the slot in the metal weight. Then rotate the weight upwards by 2 half turns. The weight is now entirely covered by the material. Finally, fit the plastic clip over the material and the weight.
When everything is hanging correctly, fit the cord with the plastic rings to the hooks on the plastic clips. The cord is long enough for groups of 5 slats. The 6th slat is then the first of the next group of 5 slats. Cut off any excess cord.
It always takes a few days before the slats hang neatly in place, so any slight creases will disappear by themselves.
You can also fit vertical blinds to a window with a sloping top frame. The blind then has to be fitted so the slats slide towards the high side of the window when the blind is opened. For this reason it’s also best to fit the operating cord on that side. To allow each slat to be cut to the right length, you should leave small gaps between the right and left ends of the rail and the window frame. You can then adjust the height of the slats relative to the window sill by sliding the rail up or down slightly. When you’ve got the position of the rail right, you can fix the lower end in place so it can’t slide downwards.
